add a kneaded eraser to the tool set
(via tina)
"One tool that would hearken back to 2D drawing class, goes hand in hand with charcoal and pencil but don't know if it's even possible in this app with the meshes and all, is the kneaded eraser. To smooth/blur/fade out sharp charcoal lines with the background."

I have some ideas for a smudge feature. Potentially smudge and eraser can be combined as a kneaded eraser Still thinking about it.

Not sure if this should be shake-to-undo or a button based version. I have a button triggered undo working locally. It feels like there are a few too many buttons on screen as is. Still thinking.

By all means keep it simple & beautiful. But give us an 'undo/redo' function. Not shake to undo tho.

I started working on this and have a somewhat functional version running locally. Adding this in the released version is quite a polarizing issue among Vellum users. Some consider the lack of undo to be a critical part of the app’s character and identity. Still thinking about whether or not to release it.

Implement gesture tool swapping all over the screen
It would make the experience even more fluid to be able to swap to the next tool with a gesture done anywhere on the screen, like a two finger tap for example. Kind of like the option-tab compination to swap between opened applications on OSX.
Then we wouldn't have think of localizing the top of the screnn, tap once on the top to have the menu appear, and then retap to sap tool.

I like this idea. It would work well with a larger tool set too. If I were to add a 4th drawing mode, the current tap-title-to-toggle modes would become laborious.

I’m investigating technical solutions for improving the quality of the exported image.

Layers It would be nice to have layers so that you could work from a reference drawing if you wish.
I know everyone want's it simple but using a reference photo to work from and the ability to have layers for drawing is really helpful for a digital drawing application. A quick undo button for a miss stroke is also needed.

Add a cross-hatch mode to the tool set
Just putting this out there to test the waters. Would you be interested in something like this?

accept congratulations for the update!
Good job David!
I have just tested it really quickly, but first impression is very positive. Nice to have a little more flexibility, but you kept it simple enough. I especially like the buttons that sets the tools to their "original" state.
(I had a bug when I first opened it: went to the settings, set the sliders of graphite to max, hit "done" and couldn't see my page, only the background stripes, but it hapened only once, now everything is fine)

There's a bug when choosing from photos. The camera roll icon is overlapping the photo library icon.
This is from the New > Saved Drawing > Photo Albums section. The camera roll icon is out of place and looks ugly. :/

when re-opening the app, the app should restore the last drawing made
This is related to the ability to re-open older drawings. The primary use case: if one takes a call while using vellum, the app closes. When the call ends, the app is launched again but the previous state is not preserved.

Implemented in version 1.0.3. (currently waiting for App Store review).
Now that this feature is done, it will be easier to implement Shake-to-Undo and Import Image.

vellum users generally seem not to care about colors. i’ll think about how the ui could accomodate a color picker system without sacrificing simplicity.

A 'viewer' as with Brushes.
I'm sure this is not at the top of anyone's list, but it is so great to be able to see the process: every mark being made exported as a movie... you have something like it posted on Vimeo - can't we all have one? ;D P.S. Vellum's strength and what keeps it valid amongst some of the bigger boys is it's minimalistic interface and it's simple correlation to this small number of real tools. Literally keep it real & thanks ;)

This is an interesting notion. I’d like to do this at some point. I think there are other feature requests that are more pressing. But I do like it.
